The first thing you notice is the polish Critical Thought Games have heaped upon GeoDefense – the menus are clear and easy to navigate. The tutorials explain everything you need to know. And, of course, the graphics and incredible. They have a retro, vector vibe to them and alone make this game more enjoyable to most. Gameplay before Graphics, I always say, but GeoDefense has become an exception.

Regardless, the gameplay is rock solid. You place towers as you would in a normal tower defense game but this time you have more depth than ever before. You can upgrade any tower to 7 levels, but the highest is not definitely the best, for example the upgrade of the standard, cheapest tower that normally has rapid fire to the max creates a sniping tower, which fires shots slowly but will normally severely dent the enemy’s health. When the game decides to up the tempo of the round these towers are not as effective as quick firing towers. A nice addition to the traditional rapid fire/laser/missile/slow down towers you can place is the black hole weapon. It absorbs the shockwaves left when you destroy a creep and if you connect it to another tower can make said tower have an extremely powerful shot.

For tower defense games this app has extreme amounts of longevity. With 30 levels – 10 on Easy, Medium and Hard it will last you a good few hours, but be warned – this game is very difficult. Luckily the difficulty curve is good – you learn the basics in the easy levels and then would be at least able to attempt the medium levels and so on. It can get frustrating, you may switch off your iPhone in anger but you’ll come back to it.

Even though, in my eyes this is the best value for money you can get on the app store it’s not without its faults. When you kill lots of enemies and they all release their beautiful multicoloured shockwaves at once, the game can get a bit laggy and hard to see the other, undefeated creeps. This is a minor problem on the easier levels as it clears away quickly, but when you have lots of enemies coming at an insanely fast pace it may be a burden. Also, fixed path tower defense is fine and all, but open-field is better, but we have the upcoming GeoDefense: Swarms for that.

GeoDefense is definitely one of the best Tower Defense games you can buy, and at $0.99/59p it is the best value for money on the app store. Extremely highly recommended.

FunkyHoops is a freestyle 2on2 basketball game with a very easy playing screen. When you first open up the application you get a quick game or league play, which they are pretty much self explanatory as to what they contain. There is also three different difficultly levels (easy, medium, hard) which provides for more challenging games. There are 6 teams to choose from with varying stats as to how good each team is. League play gives you 10 weeks worth of games to be played and try to win the championship at the end!

This game gives you a tutorial option before each game in case you have never played before or you have forgotten something. There are only 3 functional controls on the main screen: directional keypad, pass/block, and shoot/steal. These controls can get pretty confusing at certain points in the game but you will most likely get used to it if you keep playing. This game also has options on the top of the screen that allow you to pause, switch between 3 different camera angles, turn music on or off, and exit the game.

The gameplay is good but it is slow-paced as you are on either side (offense or defense) with the dunks and the blocking especially. This game definitely has a lot of potential because it is a great idea for an iPhone application and a good starting interface, I will look forward to updates to this app in the near future with maybe different time of day or different courts. Also something I would love to see in this app is the ability to customize your own player and maybe even your own court, that would be awesome!

This is an extremely fun animated game that has a creative idea to it!

The point of this game is to launch your stick figure out of a cannon and get your guy to hit a target that is uniquely placed somewhere on the level you are on.
There are many obstacles in this game such as: rocks, balls, springs, and much more that makes this game have a difficult part to it at the end levels.

The screen has a very easy interface with only two pressable buttons, “Reset” and “Menu” which they are self explanitory with what they do. Also your score for the current level is on top along with your best score on that specific level.

There are 73 total levels and every one is so fun and you will want to keep coming back for more, I promise you!

CreepyTown is what seems like it would be a somewhat scary-like game but it really isn’t. CreepyTown is a game where you use these green lines to control this little ghost in the shape of a ball to try and hit all of the rocks on the side of the map. There are coins you pick up when you crack open the rocks that are in the form of coins. There is also a blue cross in the corner of each level and when you hit that, it opens up this blue hole which takes you to the next level. At the end of each level you get your cash, time, and score (as seen below).

Now this game does not allow you to control as much as you would like it to. It would make it better if you could stop the ball and launch it in the direction you wanted every once in a while or just a little bit more features.
Also, this game gets a little slow-paced at times and tends to control itself (the ghost ball creature).

The replay value is not that great because you continuously do the same thing over and over with very little that changes besides the map.

Now this application is on sale right now for $0.99 so I think it is worth it right now but it may not be when the price goes up.

MiniGore is a very fun animated game that has a main character that looks like a lego character. This is the first version of the game and I was actually very impressed, the graphics and the sounds really stood out to me because they have actual voices talking and the graphics are great too for an animated game. There are also big boss-like creature that will try to kill you and when you kill them, 4 baby monsters come out, which could make it tough (As seen below).

The playing screen is nicely designed with your score on top along with your lives which is always a plus. Also the controls is this game are very nice and fun to play with, as they have the joystick like controls (as seen in the video below).

The options also allow you to expert mode which is very challenging and makes you want to keep coming back for more, which is great!

There is also an Online Mode, which is what I think is the coolest part of the game. In there, you can import friends from Twitter or Facebook to see what OpenFeint (developer) game they are playing. Also, you can chat with other people in a list of rooms they have made, that is a nice little touch up. There is also the leaderboards, which show the world’s high scores, including yours and that is how you get your ranking.

So overall this game has no cons and a lot of pros, to be honest with you I think this game deserves to be in the top 5 if not the number one top paid application.
